Position Summary
The role of the Technical Director (TD) is to manage and oversee the development and delivery of the technical departments of ‘Elvis Evolution’ in London for Layered Reality. The TD will work closely with the Executive Producer, the wider production team, and key members of the creative team to ensure that the project is delivered on time and within budget. This role is suited to those with theatrical, live entertainment, attractions or immersive experience.

Upwards Reports: Executive Producer

Sideways Reports: Production Manager, Operations Director, Project Manager, Producer

Downward Reports: Departmental technical teams (freelance/contractor), key vendors and suppliers
Other Key Relationships: Creative Team, Layered Reality Senior Leadership Team, Finance Departments

Scope & Responsabilities

Management
To work with the Executive Producer to ensure that they are managing their necessary teams and resources accordingly.
Manage the process of technical team onboarding.
To report upwards of any issues with regard to concerns within their vertical, that may cause financial, resource or time implications.
To manage the day-to-day running of the technical vertical, including the direct line-management of any freelance technical roles or contractors.
Regular analysis of technical costings for specific requests from the creative team by way of experience or third party consultation.
Attendance at pre-production site visits alongside the core team and any required vendors (if required).
Oversee and manage the technical drawings, schematics and other relevant paperwork to ensure the production is compliant, fit for purpose and efficiently scoped prior to load in.
To periodically review the production RACI and ensure that the necessary teams are structured and equipped to carry out their duties as best possible.

Production
To collaborate with the Executive Producer and the Production Manager on the production schedules and load in/load out schedules in good time, ensuring alignment with the budget.
To ensure that crewing and staffing are recruited, PO’d and contracted in good time ahead of the load in.
To act as an escalation point between any issues with the key vendors and the core Elvis Evolution production and creative teams and ensure that the transfer of information is consistently maintained.
To ensure that the technical systems integration is robust and fit for purpose, and along with all technical HODs that the production has a developed control system that suits the nature of the production.
To lead on the production tender process alongside the Production Manager to ensure that scopes of work are supplied to key identified vendors and that the tender process is delivered as competitively as possible.
To work with the Production Manager and to advise them on requirements for the architects of the building that may impact the technical vertical to ensure that the venue is prepared and delivered base on the required scope as provided by the Production Manager.
To work alongside the creative team to realise their ambitions, whilst also maintaining the expectations of delivering the project on budget.
To work alongside the Head of Operations to ensure that staff recruited for the show run are suitably qualified and are able to operate the technical systems and equipment.
Alongside the Production Manager, ensure that both the production and technical verticals are communicating promptly and correctly in order to deliver the production.
To ensure that production processes are periodically reviewed, adapted and amended to ensure that the delivery of the project maintains consistency of delivery.
Sign off for all H&S, Fire, RAMS (both standard and Fire RAs), and electrical compliance documentation (and local variations thereof) and other key technical documentation in order to ensure the safety of our staff and audiences.
To ensure that the overall quality of the production is delivered to the highest possible level.
Sign off for all H&S, Fire, RAMS (both standard and Fire RAs), and electrical compliance documentation (and local variations thereof) and other key technical documentation in order to ensure the safety of our staff and audiences.
Ensure solid communication with vendors and suppliers to maintain good working relationships.

Budget
Work alongside the Executive Producer to sign off on the technical aspects of the budgets.
Oversee the tender process to validate costs for high value contracts.
Regularly update the Executive Producer on variations to forecast costs during the pre-production period.
Alongside the Production Manager, Oversee the Deputy Production Manager’s management of invoice sign-off and reconciliation, alongside the finance department.

Other
Work alongside other internal departments to ensure that we have strong levels of communication
Where appropriate, to work closely on future planning of the project, including assessment of viability of future sites, budget creation and validation, and vendor selection and management.
To develop and review the structure of the project on a regular basis alongside the Executive Producer to ensure value for money and efficient working practices.
To develop and implement new production practices to the project to ensure that the project is run in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
To act as an ambassador for the project and for Layered Reality in front of external vendors, clients or partners.
Demonstrate best practice in aspects of efficiency, communication and attention to detail.
To maximise income and minimize expenditure wherever possible, without jeopardising the quality of the project.
Leverage strong existing relationships with vendors to benefit the production.
Lead training for other members of the team with the production department (and outside if relevant)
Act with honesty and integrity, maintaining confidentiality and ensuring positive working approaches across all aspects of the role.
Act as a mentor and a leader in your field to demonstrate best practice and to effectively share knowledge of this project and the wider industry.

Desired Attributes
At least 10 years experience within a similar role in the theatre or live events industry.
Management of budgets in excess of £2m
Strong network of UK and EU based suppliers and vendor. US vendors are desirable, but not essential.
Experience of managing large teams
Experience of working in a fast paced, dynamic environment
Strong understanding of production process for theatre, attractions or immersive events
Strong understanding of UK H&S requirements, including experience developing Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), as well as required electrical compliance standards within the UK.
Ability to relocate to London for the installation period.

Contract Length - End of November 2024, with review after 3 months and view to extend

Working Type - Hybrid (an expectation of 2-3 days in the office prior to load in, with full time presence on site during the load in period)
