We are currently seeking a Technical Manager to join our incredible team at Layered Reality, working on the award-winning Jeff Wayne’s The War of The Worlds: The Immersive Experience. This is a groundbreaking multi-sensory adventure set across a vast 22,000 sqft venue, blending immersive theatre, Jeff Wayne’s iconic music, virtual reality, augmented reality, holograms, and more.

Position Summary

As the leader of our technical team, you will embody the essence of Layered Reality, keeping our show running to an excellent standard for our guests. This dynamic role encompasses a wide array of responsibilities, ensuring every day brings new challenges and opportunities. As Technical Manager, you will play a vital role in the smooth, safe, and efficient delivery of this complex, high-tech production. The technical department is responsible for maintaining and operating all show elements on a day-to-day basis. This includes the master show control system, which automates key transitions and effects—from lighting and sound to AV, VR, pyrotechnics, motion simulators. 

You will be instrumental in ensuring effective communication between your technical team, show operations, and performers, especially during live performances where timely and accurate information sharing is essential.

Scope & Responsibilities


Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Development

Technical Operations

Ensure all technical systems, including audio, VR, projection,  lighting, video, and automation, operate at peak performance and are maintained to industry-leading standards.

Implementing and document detailed pre-show checks, technical run-throughs, and operational protocols to ensure smooth performances.

Monitor system performance in real time, troubleshooting and resolving technical issues promptly to minimize disruption.

Maintain documentation for all technical elements, including schematics, flow diagrams, and standard operating procedures

Safety & Compliance

Uphold the highest safety standards by implementing comprehensive risk assessments and compliance protocols in accordance with relevant regulations, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA), especially with regard to the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), Work at Height Regulations 2005 as well as any other relevant legislation, and to remain abreast of any changes in the law.

Lead safety briefings and training sessions, ensuring the team is well-versed in emergency procedures and equipment use.

Conduct regular audits of equipment and working practices, addressing any deficiencies swiftly.

Serve as a role model for safety, fostering a proactive culture where team members feel empowered to identify and mitigate risks.

Resource & Budget Management

Oversee the procurement, maintenance, and inventory of technical equipment, ensuring all assets are in optimal condition.

Manage budgets effectively, balancing cost efficiency with the uncompromising quality standards of Layered Reality.

Coordinate with suppliers, contractors, and vendors to source innovative solutions and secure top-tier support for technical operations.

Collaboration & Innovation

Act as the primary technical liaison with creative teams, translating artistic objectives into actionable technical solutions.

Collaborate with designers, directors, and production managers to integrate technical elements seamlessly into the overall guest experience.

Stay ahead of industry trends, introducing new technologies and methods to enhance production quality and operational efficiency.

Additional Duties

Represent the Technical team in company-wide meetings, contributing to strategic planning and decision-making.

Provide on-the-ground support during technical rehearsals, previews, and performances, ensuring all systems run smoothly.

Assist in the development of company-wide technical standards, sharing knowledge and best practices with other productions and teams.

Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be requested by the Head of Production and Senior Technical Manager, Senior Operations Manager, Venue Operations Manager or the Company. 


Required Qualifications/Expertise 

Experience: Minimum of 3 years in a technical management role within live entertainment, immersive productions, or a related field.

Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of audio systems (Dante), Projection Mapping, VR, networking, lighting systems, and motion sims. 

Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead, mentor, and inspire teams, with a track record of fostering growth and collaboration.

Safety Acumen: In-depth knowledge of health and safety standards, including LOLER, PUWER, and risk assessment methodologies.

Communication: Exceptional interpersonal and organisational skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
